Rat Bait Laws Have Changed in Australia: What This Means for Rodent Control on the Gold Coast

Rodent Control Gold Coast

If you’ve tried to grab rat or mouse bait off the shelf at Bunnings recently and come up empty-handed, you’re not imagining it. Australia’s pesticide regulator has introduced significant new restrictions on the most common rodent baits, and it’s worth understanding exactly what’s changed and what it means for rodent control Gold Coast homeowners can actually rely on.

What Actually Changed

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA), Australia’s national pesticide regulator, has declared second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides, known as SGARs, a restricted chemical product. In practice, this means the strongest and most commonly used rat and mouse baits can now be sold only to licensed operators, such as professional pest controllers, not the general public.

The change happened in two steps. On 12 March 2026, the APVMA certified SGARs as restricted chemical products, limiting future sale to licensed professionals. Then, on 24 March 2026, it went further and suspended the registration of every SGAR product for 12 months as an interim measure while a longer-term framework is worked through. Bunnings has since committed to pulling all SGAR products from its shelves by 30 June 2026, well ahead of the regulator’s own timeline.

Why the Change Happened

SGARs are single-feed baits, meaning a rodent only needs to eat them once to receive a lethal dose. That makes them highly effective, but it also means poisoned rodents often survive long enough to be eaten by predators, passing the poison further up the food chain. This is known as secondary poisoning, and it has been a serious and well-documented problem for Australian wildlife. Rodenticide residue has been detected in more than 50 native bird species, 30 non-target native mammals and 16 species of native reptile or amphibian, along with family pets that get into bait around the home.

Are Rat Baits Completely Banned?

No. SGARs haven’t been banned outright; they’ve been restricted to licensed professional use. Weaker first-generation products, such as those containing warfarin, may still be available to the public in the short term, and traps and other mechanical control methods remain completely unrestricted. But for anyone dealing with a genuine rodent problem, the most effective baiting products are now off-limits for DIY use.

The good news is this doesn’t mean you’re stuck with a rodent problem. It simply means the job now needs to go through a licensed pest control company rather than a DIY approach.
